Too Cute

Black Barbie and Ken's Nigerian Traditional Wedding

This morning as I fluttered around twitter I found this link from @Africanweddings.  What a stroke of genius from Obi Photography.  This is the cutest thing and I think you will get a kick out of it as well, see the entire wedding.

Get The Look

Muniluchi posted a beeeeeeautiful the traditional Nigerian wedding of Eromosele and Emimien.  I was struck by the African Coral worn by the bride. So chic, fashionable and by adding a few simple accents you can get the look as well.

Igbankwu

There has been so much talk about the lavish and over the top wedding customs of Western Weddings. I, on the other hand, know differently, customs around the world, has us (Americans, movie stars, narcissistic couples), beat in the opulence of celebrating nuptials.
Igbankwu is one of three wedding ceremonies which is the Igbo word for traditional marriage ceremony (displayed here in these photos).
  • The traditional marriage held in the house of the woman
  • The official wedding, held in a registry office which allows only one wife
  • The religious marriage.
Prior to the Igbankwu the bride and grooms family discuss the terms of the marriage. This is something all couples of any culture should do, especially here in America.

Need A Wake Up Call

In Nigeria there it is quite common that no one is expected to arrive on time to any event. BUT, the groom's family is expected to be on time. If they are late, better have a little cash on hand to pay the price. It is a part of the custom to ask for late payment.
So this is where the "late payment" started.

Sent From The Heart

A Traditional Nigerian Wedding

As in many older cultures of the world, weddings are filled with ceremonies that include preparing the bride and groom for the next step in life. In Nigeria there is a ceremony for the bride and grooms families to get to know each other. The grooms family will arrive at the brides home with a letter that asks for her hand in marriage. This ceremony includes dancing and money gifts to the brides family. They hope the brides family will except the letter. This is done a few days before the wedding.
The Engagement Ceremony is next. The grooms family visits again to find out the response. Both families are now properly introduced. I am sure years ago days this was more than a formality. If the letter or the brides price was just not right the young lovers could not get married. Kind of like Romeo and Juliet.
