Breaking Things/ A Tradition

There are many wedding customs that seem to include breaking things.  In a Czech tradition at the beginning of the reception, the Bridal Party will break a plate at the feet of the Newlyweds.  They both sweep the broken pieces up to insure happiness and their willingness to work together.

PROJECT:UNBROKEN

Now what to do with those broken pieces.  The above photo is of a center piece made from broken plates.  Project:Unbroken
"We have all broken something by accident. For most of us, the pieces go right into the trash. But to22 saw broken pottery as a great design opportunity. “Most people see broken objects such as dishes as useless. Instead we saw that something wonderful was revealed. It’s about a second life- and what better way to have these qualities noticed than by placing them right out in the open, in the middle of your life? Your dining table is the place where you converse, the place where you share and this design was created to be the centerpiece.”

Another project for the broken plates is create your frame that will hold one of your favorite wedding photos of the day.  Visit The Budget Fashionista/DIY:Mosaic Picture Frames for full instructions.

Nidhi Chanani

Thanks to a facebook friend, this video was found.  The artist Nidhi Chanani captures love in her work, which will reflect mixed raced marriages, like her own.  This makes fans so happy because they feel represented.  Below is her process of Capturing Love.

Chiming The Bells

Chiming of the Bells is an old Irish wedding tradition to keep evil spirits away and restore harmony if a couple is fighting.

I found this bracelet on Etsy.com./Nanapatt, which will make for a nice gift for your Bridesmaids, to shake their wrists as you walk down the isle and keep the evil spirits away.

Turquiose Jingle Bells
....and yes it is a cross/cultural idea this seller is from Thailand.

The Afrocentric Bridesmaid

This is Marvette, who created this video after receiving her dress for an Afrocentric wedding in November 2011.  I had not seen her in person so I held my breath hoping she would only have to do little alterations.  It fit perfect.  I was further complimented when she sent me this video.

Arranged

It is a centuries old (and even older than that) tradition, that is still practiced today, arranging a marriage.  The selection of ones spouse, is chosen by someone other than the couple.  Although this practice is deeply rooted in Royalty and Aristocratic families, the tradition is common in countries like Asia, Africa, Middle East, and through out the world.

Arranged tells the story of two women,  Muslim and Orthodox Jewish, who form a strong friendship, through teaching and arranged marriages.  Rochel and Nasira may appear to have restrictions, but that is the opposite of what their lives represent. It is both touching and fascinating as we (the viewer) get a glimpse of a very different world, modern and ancient.

The movie was made in 2007 and I just happened on it via "demand".  It is a real gem of a movie: Arranged
