It is a centuries old (and even older than that) tradition, that is still practiced today, arranging a marriage. The selection of ones spouse, is chosen by someone other than the couple. Although this practice is deeply rooted in Royalty and Aristocratic families, the tradition is common in countries like Asia, Africa, Middle East, and through out the world.

Arranged tells the story of two women, Muslim and Orthodox Jewish, who form a strong friendship, through teaching and arranged marriages. Rochel and Nasira may appear to have restrictions, but that is the opposite of what their lives represent. It is both touching and fascinating as we (the viewer) get a glimpse of a very different world, modern and ancient.

Indian weddings are full of traditions. Some of them date back thousands of years, like the pheras (walk around the fire), and some are newer, like the jutta chuppai (shoe stealing).

Because Indian weddings are religious events, people present under the mandap (the four-posted canopy) must have their shoes off since it is a sacred space. The bride, the groom and the families are present at one point or another under the mandap.

When the wedding ceremony is done, the groom naturally looks for his missing shoes. And so the girls offer the hostage shoes in exchange for cash. In my wedding (Preeti), it turned out to be a complete, yet hilarious disaster.

My husband's shoes cost Rs 400 ($10) but my girlfriends wanted $100, 100€, AND Rs 4500. They really weren't into the negotiation thing. He offered $10, the girls refused, so he spent the rest of the day barefoot or wearing flip flops.

Now, there's no religious reason to steal a groom's shoes, rather it's done as a way to build kinship between the groom and his new sisters-in-laws. It's a fun way to bring the families together.

Eventually, the missing shoes turned up in my sister-in-law's bag after they had been around girl to girl as a hostage. At least my husband has his shoes and his $10.

    Embracing their Japanese heritage and culture Reid and Jaci held a private traditional Japanese ceremony that included Traditional Japanese wedding customs (shinzen shiki). Jaci was professionally dressed in a traditional all-white wedding Kimono while Reid was dressed in a black kimono with his family crest in white in five different places.

    A few days later they held a western style wedding ceremony at the Ocean Crystal Chapel. There was not a dry eye (or nose) in the chapel as the two exchanged heartfelt words to each other. Their was so much crying that the pastor commented afterwards, "i think we just took care of the drought."

    This is their same day edit feature we crafted and presented to them at their wedding reception following their western ceremony.

    In true form to their non-traditional recessional we gave them a non-traditional ending to their feature.

I had not heard this reference of a wedding cake. I happened to be watching Food(orgraphy), The History Of Pastry. In that show, there was a mention of the Brides Pie. Hummm, I did a little bit of digging and here is what I found.

The Brides Pie is dish popular in the 17th and 19th centuries, so maybe your great great grandmother had a slice at a wedding celebration. The pie is a concoction of sweet breads, bacon, chestnuts, nutmeg, butter, oysters, and sliced dates or a mutton pie could have been presented. A glass ring was also on the ingredient list. The lady who found the ring would be the next to marry. In more elaborate weddings the brides pie was the centerpiece and the cake seemed to put the attention on the bride. Other prefix names used bride bed, bridegroom, bridesmaid.

This Disappointed Me

On a recent episode of "Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?" a couple challenges each other for wedding day details. Both are Chinese American but the Groom would like more Chinese traditional customs incorporated into the wedding. The Bride does not, as I remember it she states she is American and does not want to do any of these old Chinese things (this is not a direct quote but it was something like that). In the clip that is posted does no justice to what happened later in the contest.

The couple goes on to other challenges and the bride looses her option to wear her white wedding gown and has to wear a Chinese traditional garment. She cried like a 5 year old and then wore the white dress anyway, as she said "Every bride wants to wear white on their wedding day". I didn't realize the world revolve around her and her opinions.

I was disappointed because she seemed to lack any cultural pride. I hope the best for this couple because this is not a good beginning.

P.S. Dude the weepy crying thing has got to stop. You will never get your way with that tactic. Stand your ground, be firm for what you want, and don't take no for an answer. Your bride got what she wanted no matter what.

I just read a question posted on Ring Envy: "How do I incorporate being a virgin bride into my wedding festivities?". You can imagine there were a huge number of responses that were against an announcement and many of them were quite funny. And then there were a few who thought "Good for you, say it loud!".

What is interesting, in some Middle Eastern Islamic countries, the bride must be a virgin. At the wedding party on the wedding night, the groom and bride leave the ceremony to consummate the marriage. The mother of the bride must stand outside the door of the bedroom to wait for the groom to hand her a blood stained sheet to verify the bride's virginity had not been violated. If the blood is not present, the groom has the right to annul the marriage.

Hindu Weddings

Hindu Brides, traditionally wear a red or red and white sari, which is very ornate with beads and beautiful embroidery. In ancient times, saris used actual gold and silver threads woven into the fabric. Even if you are not Hindu, you can certainly be inspired by these colorful celebrations. I have had a few brides who have made the jump (they were not Indian) and wore red on their wedding day. But not every bride is that comfortable stepping that far away from their own comfort zone. Think about wearing a red dress for the reception. You and your guests will have a kick out of the change.

Shattered To Pieces, It's All Good!

So you must have seen the commercials for When In Rome, where the maid of honor is asked to smash a vase which is good luck. My first response to this was, "OK here is Hollywood making stuff up." But it is based on an old Italian tradition.

Here how it goes: In Southern regions of Italy, the couple shattered a vase or glass into many pieces at the end of the wedding day. The number of pieces represented the number of years they'd be happily married to one another.

Make it fun for everyone. Get small hammers and small (.99 store vases). Put the vases in cloth bags. Add a note about the tradition.

Just a note about breaking the vases, safety is key and you don't want pieces of glass, ceramics flying through the air and making a mess. DO NOT HAVE YOUR GUESTS SMASH THE VASES! Unless you plan on providing safety eye glasses too.

In Ancient Rome, it was believed that it was unlucky to marry in February and May but lucky in June. Holidays and festivals are celebrated in these two months. Which means if a wedding is planned it will upset the Gods.

I have another perspective, I think everyone will be too busy preparing for the daily celebrations to pay attention to a wedding in the mix. Good advice for today's couples, if you think planning a wedding around a 3 day weekend, national holiday, or the Superbowl, this deserves a second thought. Although weddings on or during holidays seem like a good idea because most of your guests will have the days off. Work is at a slower pace and everyone will be relaxed. Good reasons to choose this time, but some guests may have wanted to plan something else for their national holiday days off, like vacationing in a B&B without seeing a single person they know.

The Superbowl is a whole other ball of wax. I read a story of a bride who thought this was a good idea since the groom's favorite teams weren't playing. It didn't matter if your man (and everyone else) likes football, you could be fighting for the attention. Then again if you carry a pom pom bouquet, he may even believe he's at the stadium. Just keep shaking those pom poms.

Anyway, there are dates to avoid and pick the wedding day very carefully. Take a poll among family and friends, which will give you some perspective for a great wedding dates.

This couples' African Themed wedding made a wow with decor, African Dancers and Drummers, and even the menu.

"The reception was held in the Moyo tent and tables were decorated with brightly colored flowers and petals, tin lanterns and blankets over the back of their chairs to ward of the evening chill. The couple were seated at the head table in elaborate wrought iron thrones. Guests were treated to a scrumptious African buffet, tribal entertainment and even face painting."

I was surprised that the couple made such a statement and the website doesn't explain why, but I am glad they did. It looks like it was so much fun.

Large South African weddings are followed by a festive feast known as Karamu.
The bride's family lights a fire in the hearth of the new couple, using fire from their own hearth.
To capture the essence of this custom, a large candle remains unlit during the ceremony, flanked by two lit smaller candles. The bride and groom each take one small candle and light the large candle, symbolizing their union. A nice way to add to this is to have each of the small candles lit by the parents of the bride and groom prior to the wedding.
This can make a beautiful statement but I have another idea. Plan an event after the Honeymoon. Begin preparing food that is cooked in the oven of your parents home or your new home. Then transport it to the in-laws to finish cooking. Everyone can bring pictures, food, and share stories over pot luck that has been prepared in the warmth and love of both parents home. There has been so much talk about the lavish and over the top wedding customs of Western Weddings. I, on the other hand, know differently, customs around the world, has us (Americans, movie stars, narcissistic couples), beat in the opulence of celebrating nuptials.
Igbankwu is one of three wedding ceremonies which is the Igbo word for traditional marriage ceremony (displayed here in these photos).

In Thailand the weddings are complicated and are filled with much symbolism that will ensure that the couple have good luck. Below a few ideas to piggy back on:

1. Thailand, like China, has a number they favor too. 9 is lucky and since Tony and Ann's wedding is in September 2009, they are on the right track. This is a table that should have only 9 guests and it should be table #9. As the silver charm #8 for the China inspired table, order the number 9 from the Charm Factory.

2 .Making Merit is a very important custom. Buddhist priests are invited to the wedding and donations are made to a local temple which ensures a life time of love in the marriage. In some weddings couples will grant animals their freedom. Some release birds or take a turtle back to the sea. These are very nice gestures but why not make a donation to an animal rescue service. Each guest at this table can have a donation made in their name.

3. The Shell Ceremony-Rad Nam Sang which translate to "soak with water". The couples and also the guest's, hands are washed using a conch shell with holy water.

I had this idea for that is inspired by this custom, give the guests conch shell soaps. Give the guests the explanation and they will get something they can use and enjoy. These shells can be found at Suddz Soap Company. Add a note that describes the hand washing ceremony. I know it is a stretch but I think it works.

4. White Thread Ceremony 'Phiti Bai Sri Su Kwan' is where the couples sit next to each other and a elder gives them sage advice and blesses them. White threads are linked and soaked in holy water. The thread is pulled from side to side and when it is broken who ever gets the longer thread is the one that loves the deepest.
Relatives will tie strings around the couples wrist (Sai Sin) to wish them good luck. Do this in reverse. Give your guests white rubber bangles (OK this is a stretch, but it is fun and really cheap), found here.
However I say use the silver #9 charm using a white cord and tie this around your guests wrists.

My Couple Tony and Ann (See Peace, Love and Wacky Traditions) gave me a list of countries that each reception table could represent. Here is my take on China:

In China Red is a color that represents joy, luck, happiness. The bride also carries a red umbrella open down the aisle which will protect her from evil spirits. The Chinese also believe that the Number 8 is good luck and an estimated 9000 couples got married last year 8.8.08 . I think they may have set a record.
Here's 8 ideas that incorporates this Chinese traditions.

The table should have only 8 guests, since 8 is a lucky number in China.
The Table number is 8. Or use a photo of your travels as the table assignment instead of numbers.
Red parasols for the 8 guests at the table
If the parasols are too expensive use red fans (really inexpensive).
Decorate the table in red with a red table cloth and gold accents
Give each of the guest a silver #8 charm (not as expensive as it sounds) tied with a red ribbon or cord.

Tony and Ann (above) are planning a wedding that includes their interests from many of their travels from around the world. This includes 2 years in the Peace Corp. Their vision for the wedding is to have gift favors at each table from a country that was memorable and important to them. Tony and Ann forwarded a list of countries they need ideas for. "The first one is at the beginning of our Moroccan adventure in 2007. We crossed over from Spain at the Rock of Gibralter into Tangier, then picked up this rental car, only t find that it wouldn't start. There were, of course other glitches along the way, but the trip was fantastic and we loved Morocco, particularly Fez. The second picture was taken in the Medina there, Ann with one of her almost-purchases."

"The final picture is from my Peace Corps days in El Salvador - I'm with my theater group, we did a play about pregnancy and religion in small town life in Mexico. It was a comedy."

If you haven't heard about Yearning For Zion Polygamist Ranch, welcome back from under that rock. Plural marriages got a real sock in the jaw when this community was revealed on the news. Children were removed (over 400) and their unique way of life was questioned everywhere. But polygamy is a world wide custom practiced by other cultures who live comfortably in their communities .

Anyway, my question is can a woman have more than one husband? Although this is less common, the practice is polyandry. In my search I found that there is a place on earth called Mustang, located the northwest part of Nepal. It is one of the few places in the Himalayan region that has retained their traditional Tibetan culture. Which includes a wife having more than one husband.

This is how it works, a man wants to marry he has to give the woman's family a piece of land as a dowry. Then another brother wants to marry he must do the same. So as not to loose their domain through marriage, brothers will marry his brother's wife. Many brothers can share one wife because there is a lack of tillable land.

I can recall a number of years ago at Brooklyn Academy of Music/Dance Africa there was a real wedding that was apart of the performance. Traditional African Dance companies performed and celebrated the couple by dancing, drumming, and singing in their honor. It was incredible.

Today couples are celebrating their heritage and culture by incorporating dancers and musicians in the ceremony.

This will then prompt a meeting of her parents and her to accept or reject the proposal. If accepted the Kola nuts are distributed amongst family, and neighbors which is an informal announcement of the impending wedding.
If you would like to incorporate this wedding custom in your big day try this:
Mail a small box of Kola nuts to as save the date favors, along with an announcement of the date of the BIG day. I know this sounds expensive, so here is another idea.
As favors give small bags of Kola nuts tagged with a description and some uses for the nuts. I found this recipe at Kola Nut Information.

Kola nut in a drink, boil about 1-2 teaspoons (1/3 to 2/3 of a tablespoon or 5-10 milliliters) of powdered kola nut in about 1 cup (8 fluid ounces) water. Let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes. Drink as is, rather than filtering it. You can add other herbs or spices to suit to your taste.

Want to save money on favors, try something the Roman's did in 400 BC. Grooms gave Walnuts to his friends as a farewell gift to being a bachelor. I don't know what nuts cost back in the 400's, I am sure it's relative to the time.
Today walnuts are CHEAP compared to a silver plated money clip. A bag of walnuts may not have the same appeal as in the olden days, but in these tough financial times don't sweat it, no one has money for a money clip, make some lovely gift bags for your guest and be happy not broke.

Fill small burlap bags or Muslin drawstring bags (these are from Pouchmart.com) with nuts. Tie and with an attach a card and the meaning.
If you could spare a few more dollars per gift, also include a nutcracker if the walnuts are in the shells.

Kimberley South Africa was a newly discovered region, began to flood the market with not so rare gems. Around 1880 Cecil John Rhodes formed De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd. The motive to control the sale of diamonds throughout the world. According to "The History of The Engagement Ring", even 65% of the diamond trade is still controlled by them.
During this time (Victorian Era) the, certain birthstones were a rarity and more desirable to the diamond. Rings were designed with the accent of diamonds, while stones like rubies, emeralds, and others took center stage.
Very interesting, when sales for diamonds began to drop, De Beers embarked on a marketing campaign that is still used today. The Moongate is a decorative feature used in landscaping. Although this is a prominent feature in many Bermudian gardens, it is not originally from the Rock (common nickname for Bermuda).

As in many older cultures of the world, weddings are filled with ceremonies that include preparing the bride and groom for the next step in life. In Nigeria there is a ceremony for the bride and grooms families to get to know each other. The grooms family will arrive at the brides home with a letter that asks for her hand in marriage. This ceremony includes dancing and money gifts to the brides family. They hope the brides family will except the letter. This is done a few days before the wedding.
The Engagement Ceremony is next. The grooms family visits again to find out the response. Both families are now properly introduced. I am sure years ago days this was more than a formality. If many of you recall, Bridezilla Brandi from Texas (The Grooms Cake). Brandi had some real issues (as so many of the Bridezillas do), with money. Brandi wanted a high class wedding with a Walmart budget. This is fine when you understand your limits, but Brandi, true to the tradition of Bridezilla, is going to solve her problem by having others solve it for her. At the Rehearsal Dinner, the groom decides to make an announcement "Can everyone keep their meals to $10 or less", as Brandi sits covers her face out of embarrassment. Some of the guest even offered to pay for their own meal, which took her over the top, so she makes an announcement "There will be a bucket for you all to put money into". This may seem inappropriate, but I think again she could have solved this problem with a long standing tradition call "The Money Dance" or "Dollar Dance".

7th Day of the 7th Month

The Emperor of Heaven's 7th daughter fell in love with Cowherd. The union was unacceptable and the Emperor separated them. The 7th daughter had to move to the star Vega and Cowherd moved to Altair. For once a year they meet on the 7th day of the 7th month.

Chinese Valentines Day is called The Daughter's Festival. In the early days, Chinese girls would train themselves in good handcrafting skills which were essential for a good marriage. On that night, unmarried girls will pray to the Weaving Maid star to become smarter. When the star Vega is high in the sky the unmarried girls have a test, they will put a needle on the water surface and if it floats this means they are already smart and they will find a husband. The girls can wish for anything but only one a year.
On this day many people will go to the temple of Matchmaker and pray for love and possible marriage.

Wedded Bliss, The Marriage of Art and Ceremony

PEM Museum

The Peobody Essex Museum of Massachusetts explores weddings as a source of art and inspiration from cultures around the world. Wedded Bliss features approximately 130 objects. With works that include artists Jacob Lawrence, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall along side couture gowns, rare jewelry, and ceremonial items. The ceremony of marriage is a complicated one, hence the success of reality shows like Bridezilla, Platinum Weddings and many others. It is curious how many customs and traditions are still practiced. The exhibit will explore the full matrimonial experience from the Africa, Asia, Europe, and the United States. I do hope to see this exhibit myself and I am sure many of you will enjoy it too.

His Last Piece

On a recent episode of Bridezilla s, budget conscious Brandi , visits a cake vendor to decide what style wedding cake she'll have for the big day. After she has made her selection, she has one more request for the Grooms Cake (more on that later).

In this tradition the cake was usually a fruit cake, which is cut up into small pieces and boxed. Female guest would then put the box under their pillow and dream of their future husband. Today the cakes are usually a chocolate flavor and the most fun is the cake is created in the shape of the groom's interests.

This cake practice is strong in the south, but couples all over are taking a slice from this sweet tradition.
Now this brings me back to Brandi, the Bridezilla lovely from Texas. As I mentioned, her Grooms Cake request left both her sister and the baker shocked. Brandi wanted the cake to be in the shape of a ... well the shape of a woman's poom poom (don't look it up you know what I'm talking about). Anyway, she thought this was a symbol of "His last piece". Poor Brandi, couldn't understand why they didn't get it. She goes on to tell her sister, the baker, the candlestick maker that she thought long and hard about this. Now, I thought, wait, this may not be appropriate for the wedding reception (as they both tried to explain) but she was dead on for the bachelors party. She was also in the wrong bakery for this type of cake. So I took a trip down the Internet highway, just for you my dear readers, and did a sexy cake search. Here is the list of what I found:

The Massai people of Kenya grow up with children of their own age and normally form relationships with these people. However, in marriage women are given to a man they do not know who is much older then themselves. The bride packs all her belongings and is dressed in her finest jewelry. At the marriage ceremony the father of the bride spits on the brides head and breasts as a blessing and then she leaves with her husband walking to her new home she never looks back fearing that she will turn to stone. This can be a very sad experience for the bride, who is 13-16 years old and may walk a long way to get to her new house. In order to ward off bad luck sometimes the women of the grooms family will even insult the bride.

So the next time your future in-laws insult you, hold your punches and say nothing, they are just trying to ward off bad luck.

When The Chickens Come Home To Roost

Listen to this Irish tradition (I know that's a Rooster, I'm no Chicken Head).

Here it is:
In Ireland a laying hen was tied to the bed on the first honeymoon night in the hope that some of its fertility would be passed on to the couple.
Now I don't even know what couple would put up with a swalking bird by their bed side as their first night of love is consummated, but this tradition must not have lasted very long. They probably got up in the morning, fried up the eggs hoping for double yolked eggs which is thought to bring fertility. Then for dinner put that unlucky bird a pot with some onions, potatoes, and spices. This I am sure was the end of a stupid tradition.
